FAQs

What is a Clubhouse?

The Clubhouse Model is Evidence Based Practice Model for adults with serious mental illness under SAMHSA. The Model is based on the belief that members are partners in their own recovery, rather than merely the passive recipients of treatment, and that meaningful work and relationships are integral parts of their recovery. Members work side by side with staff to organize and administer every aspect of the program, and success is dependent upon the degree to which members assume responsibility for themselves. All certified Clubhouses adhere to  International Clubhouse Standards.

Does Threshold provide psychiatric treatment, including medication and therapy?

No. Threshold is a community based Psychosocial Rehabilitation program. Threshold members are encouraged by staff and fellow members to comply with medications and to keep appointments with their doctors, but they are not required to do so to remain members. Threshold maintains a partnership with psychiatric teams from Duke University Hospital, UNC Hospital, Central Regional Hospital, and Community Based Services where many of our members seek Medical and Psychiatric treatment.

Why are Threshold clients referred to as members?

The Clubhouse Model focuses on strengths rather than weaknesses and is based on the idea of equality between members and staff.  Members are an integral, active part of the Clubhouse.  The word “member” reflects emphasis on the person not just their illness and connotes a sense belonging and ownership that members have in the Clubhouse community.

Am I eligible for membership at Threshold?

To be eligible for membership at Threshold, you need to have Medicaid originating from Alliance Health catchment area (Durham, Wake, Johnston, Cumberland counties), age 18 or over, with an Axis I diagnosis as the primary focus of current treatment to include Major Depression with Psychotic Features, Bipolar Disorder type 1, Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective Disorder, or Psychosis NOS.

How do I become a member?

To schedule a tour of our program and begin orientation, you must first have your case manager or your psychiatrist send a referral to Threshold's Senior Utilization Management/Intake Coordinator Erica Weaver. What is the “one rule” of Threshold?

We really only have one “rule” here at Threshold and it is a simple rule to follow: Members shall not interfere with the rehabilitation of another member.  This “rule” is designed to ensure a safe and secure environment for all who come here, including you.

What opportunities are available for me as member of the Threshold?

Members are involved in the intake and orientation of new members, hiring of new staff, housing support, building maintenance, policy decision making, advocacy initiatives, Clubhouse trainings, meal preparation and service and program development.

Does Threshold provide transportation?

Threshold members are required to arrange their own transportation to and from the Clubhouse.  We assist members with learning the bus routes and with applying for paratransit services. Threshold does provide transportation to the main bus terminal from Threshold’s Thursday evening social/rec activities.

What are Threshold’s COVID protocols?

Threshold is currently practicing all CDC and state/county/city guidelines for COVID. Threshold continues to promote and support full vaccinations for all members and staff. Each day staff and members are screened for symptoms and exposure upon entry, and everyone is required to wear masks throughout their participation at Threshold. Occupancy limits are required in all rooms and social distancing is strongly encouraged. All meals are prepared to-go to limit exposure to the virus. Please contact e.barber@thresholdclubhouse.org if you have questions about COVID policies/procedures.
