Executive Director

Susie Deter

Board of Directors Susie

Threshold Executive Director Susan Deter drew on her experience with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in theater when she began working with special populations doing arts and crafts, theater productions, etc. She dabbled in it to pay the bills, and found she liked the work. She became an activities director for an aftercare program for adults with severe mental illness, and was hooked. After adding an MSW to her resume, Deter eventually found her true home, directing a “clubhouse model” program in Warren, Michigan, just outside of Detroit.

Deter’s move to NC in 1997 to lead Threshold was a natural progression, as much of her big family and a college roommate live in this area. Threshold has grown remarkably under her leadership.  Average daily attendance is up to 57 per day, and she’s shepherded Threshold through two major renovations, all while continuing Threshold’s focus on the individual support and respect that makes the clubhouse model so successful.

Deter’s open-door policy at Threshold means constant interruption, from members who need to check in, student nursing, social work, and occupational therapy interns gathering their assignment for the day, to staff members sorting out everchanging billing and paperwork requirements.  She manages the frequent chaos with healthy doses of chocolate and good cheer.

Deter has been a mental health professional for 29 years, the last nine here in Durham. She serves as part of the local United Way Agency  Directors team.  She is also involved with the Durham Mental Health Association, and collaborates closely with other agencies in the community who provide services to adults with severe mental illness.  Deter also serves on the International Center for Clubhouse Development faculty, helping other clubhouses around the southeast improve their programs.   "I've come back to the clubhouse model," she says. "It's not the easy way. It's just the one that works."
