Transitional & Supported Employment
Transitional Employment
Companies
benefit from TE. They find enthusiastic, trained workers at prevailing
wages, and guaranteed stability for jobs that typically have high
turnover. If a member must be absent, another member or a staff worker
fills in. And when a member moves to another assignment, after six to
nine months, Threshold trains the replacement. All placements are
part-time, generally 15-20 hours per week, therefore, the positions do
not require any employee benefits such as sick leave, vacation time,
holidays, or overtime.
Employers who participate in Threshold's Transitional Employment program are eligible for the Work Opportunity Tax Credit. Call (919) 682-4124 for more information, or go to the IRS page.
Each year more than 20 Threshold members work in more than 15 TE positions provided by several companies in Durham, including the Ninth St. Bakery, Washington-Duke Inn and Golf Club, Timmons Fabrication, Angus Barn, and Duke University.

Supported Employment
Supported
Employment (SE) provides similar support to members who are seeking or
have moved into more permanent employment. SE is designed to ease
members’ integration into long-term jobs by providing a direct referral
from the clubhouse to the employer, as well as some initial
on-job-training and assistance where it may be needed. This often
includes a full job search, assistance with application forms, resumes
and cover
letters, as well as help with obtaining needed items such as appropriate clothing for the chosen job.
Once
comfortably settled in the job, Threshold staff members maintain
contact with the working member through both personal and telephone
communication. Additional support is provided through bi-monthly
Employment Dinners and other less formal settings as needed. The
involvement of Threshold staff also provides a level of support to the
company that may initially be unsure about hiring a member for a
permanent job.
Even as members achieve a level of confidence
that allows them to obtain and maintain jobs without direct assistance
from Threshold, the clubhouse continues to function as a vital support
to these independent workers. Clubhouse sponsored social events
offer additional opportunities after work hours for working members to
seek support and validation of their achievements.
